A Detour on the Goat Lake Access Road: A Unique Hiking Experience

Our recent attempt to hike the Goat Lake Trail turned into an unexpected detour when we encountered a large boulder blocking the access road. The boulder had tumbled down from the hillside above, making it impossible for our vehicle to pass. Initially, we planned to hike both the access road and the trail, but this obstacle meant that doing so would have required an overnight stay—something we hadn't prepared for. As a result, I'll be sharing our experience on the access road rather than providing a full trail review.

Despite this setback, the access road to Goat Lake had its own charm. Unlike many narrow and uneven forest roads, this one was wide, allowing our group to spread out comfortably. The road was mostly uphill with a very rocky terrain, so proper footwear was essential to navigate it safely.

During our hike, the weather was notably cold as we were just below the snow line. Layering up was crucial to stay warm in these conditions. The crisp air and wintery atmosphere added a unique charm to our journey, making the hike memorable despite not reaching Goat Lake itself.

One of the highlights of our hike was the breathtaking view of the Olympic Mountains. The mountains, blanketed in snow, stood majestically against the clear sky. Being so close to these towering giants was an otherworldly experience, providing a stunning backdrop for our hike.

While we couldn't follow through with our original plan, the access road offered its own challenges and rewards. This experience reminded us of the importance of preparation and adaptability when embarking on outdoor adventures. We'll certainly return to Goat Lake better equipped and ready for whatever nature throws our way.
